DEFINITION:
Motivation greatly affects the learning a child does. A teacher needs to evaluate the motivation of the child as well as their systems acting on their life. Do their parents read or encourage them to read? Do they have books? The presence that reading and writing playing in a child's life greatly affect the outlook they have on literacy. Are they motivated to learn and gain a greater understanding? As seen from experience, motivation and attitude have an ENORMOUS affect on the capabilities of a student. This can be incredibly situational; motivated in some areas and not others, or motivated one day but not the next.
KEY TERMS:
- competence motivation - people naturally want to be good at what they do; some kids are motivated by the competition as well, to be the best
- self-efficiency - believing that they can complete a task, often on their own
- intrinsic motivation - motivation that comes from within, the want to do something for their personal interest, bettering themselves, curiosity, or learning how
- extrinsic motivation - a source of outside motivation that is somehow measured by someone else. some theorists believe that any and all motivation is truly extrinsic, they we never do things 100% for ourselves.
- learning oriented v. performance oriented - learning oriented is the desire to learn and better oneself, generally more like intrinsic motivation. performance oriented is wanted validation for accomplishment, tends to be extrinsic motivation
- volition - will, persistence, continued self-efficiency. motivation may spur the initial interest, but it is pursued or not pursued because of a lack of interest
DEVELOPMENT:
Literacy - a higher reading motivation causes students to read more, and usually have higher reading achievement
Writing - related to writing achievement, if they write frequently they become better and writing becomes easier
Teachers play and integral part in motivating students, as do the student's home life. Teachers use countless methods for motivating students, other than extrinsic grade motivation. Many have proven beneficial in literacy. Teachers should provide open ended tasks which allow for: challenge, choice, control, collaboration, opportunities to construct meaning, consequences for their efforts.
