Fluency...

DEFINITION:
Increasing a students ability to read more smoothly and consistently. Fluency may be as a result of increased vocabulary. If a student knows and is able to decode more words, they will read more fluently. Fluency is the ability to decipher an unknown word, but striving to learn words and gain faster recognition of words.

KEY TERMS:
  • decoding - figuring out a word based clues/understanding of vocabulary
  • prosody - the way in which words are emphasized, the tone and flow that you use to read texts smoothly

DEVELOPMENT
This is a lifelong process where individuals are constantly challenged by foreign vocabulary. When a reader encounters a word they do not know it often slows them down when reading. If the reader slows down and struggles with an aspect of the text their fluency is affected and thus their comprehension suffers. Readers strive to read smoothly without stumbling or questioning a word. The more reading that occurs/more experience the reader gain familiarity with more words and thus does not get caught up with certain words.

ASSESSMENTS:

SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS:
Fluency is a constant struggle when reading because a greater amount of vocabulary is foreign. They may not have the skill sets to decode words and gain meaning quickly, so their fluency suffers. It is important for SLL to read/speak more to work on their fluency. The more fluid they are the more accepted their speech is in a foreign society.
